Empowering Men to Embrace Change and Thrive
Growing up on a council estate in the southwest of Scotland taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, determination, and the pursuit of self-improvement.
From an early age, I understood that traditional academic routes were not my path, so I sought to create my own. My journey began humbly, washing dishes in a local hotel, which required a daily 20-mile round-trip by bicycle. Yet, this job was more than just a wage; it was my entry into the workforce, where I demonstrated a strong work ethic by consistently showing up for every shift, volunteering for extra hours, and ultimately securing a chef apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship was a turning point. I was fortunate to have mentors who invested in my development, imparting the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the culinary field. Committed to continuous self-improvement, I advanced my career by taking on roles in increasingly prestigious hotels, including The Savoy in London, and even gaining international experience. Despite the challenges, such as modest wages and the demanding nature of the profession, I remained focused on growth, learning essential life lessons along the way—like the importance of financial responsibility, which I realised the hard way after a bounced rent cheque led to a harsh confrontation with my landlord.
After nearly two decades of working in top-tier kitchens, my growing frustration with the industry's declining standards prompted me to seek a new direction. At the age of 35, I made the bold decision to transition to law enforcement, joining the Lothian and Borders Police. To meet the physical and mental demands of this new career, I dedicated myself to improving my fitness and overall health, successfully transforming my life once again.
My early years in the police were spent absorbing as much knowledge as possible, and I quickly found fulfilment in this new role, despite the financial adjustments and demanding shift patterns. Over the next 21 years, I progressed through various challenging assignments, including CID, Counter-Terrorism, Child Abuse Investigation, and Organized Crime, before being promoted to Sergeant. Each role reinforced my belief in the value of hard work, adaptability, and continuous learning.
As I approached my mid-50s, I began to feel the same restlessness that had driven my previous career change. Recognising that the physical and mental demands of policing were becoming increasingly difficult, I made the decision to retire after a rewarding 21-year tenure.
Reflecting on my diverse experiences—from cooking in world-renowned establishments and extraordinary locations like the Kremlin and the Pyramids of Giza, to serving in critical law enforcement roles during events like the 2012 Olympics—I am reminded of the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability. I have successfully transformed myself from a chef who enjoyed a cigarette and a beer, to someone who has completed 18 marathons across the globe.
Now, as I enter this new chapter, I am passionate about using the lessons life has taught me to coach and support others on their journeys. My commitment to self-betterment continues to drive me, and I am eager to help others unlock their potential and achieve their goals.
"Having worked closely with Neil in what could be described as a challenging job, he was a constant support to me throughout. Having changed my career slightly later in life, I struggled with my confidence. Neil encouraged me daily, put trust in my skills and recognised my potential. He was approachable and his door was always open if you needed advice. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone as knowledgeable about so many subjects as Neil! His support has played a huge part in shaping my career and I am very grateful for that."
